Meet Our Team of Part Time Helpers
Would You Like To Join Them

I originally joined the Country Market in about 2009 in order to sell plants and soon became involved in helping to run the stall. Once I had learned the ropes I began to help in other areas and inevitably finished up on the committee, including Chairman until 2018 and then decided to have break whilst still continuing as regular helper until Covid closed us down.

I believe the Market is an important community initiative so now that it has restarted I help as often as I can.

I was a Toy Librarian for Queen Mary's Children's Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey before retiring in 1993.

My husband, Ray and I moved to East Sussex and bought a smallholding, growing soft fruit, top fruit and vegetables. We had 22 very happy years there with geese, ducks and chickens. We also ran a stall at the local Farmer’s Market.

We moved to Great Bookham in November 2015 to be near family. I joined the Bookham Country Market ln 2017, helping on various stalls before running the refreshment counter.

Since reopening you will find me on the eggs stall, and enjoying meeting the customers once more.

After 30 years with BT I retired in 1991. Wishing to find an outdoor life, my wife Barbara and I bought a smallholding in East Sussex. We grew various soft and top fruit, plus runner beans and tomatoes, for the local greengrocery wholesaler, and our own stall at the local Farmer’s Market.

After 22 years we moved to Great Bookham to be near our daughter and her family in Ashtead.

I started helping at the Bookham Country Market on a temporary basis on various stalls. When Barbara took over the refreshments I volunteered to help-out with the heavier jobs.

Since the Market re-opened you will find me on the meat stall, I look forward to meeting you on Friday mornings.

We became Bookham residents in 2017 and we were keen to be involved in the local community. We were introduced to Bookham Country Market in the Old Barn Hall, by a kind neighbour.

We are both interested in arts and crafts, and Jenny is interested in garden plants. We are both keen to support the continuing existence of the Old Barn Hall, which we consider as being the social hub of the community.

I’m Lee and have lived in Bookham for the last 13 years, having moved here from London. I have attended the Country Market for a number of years and have enjoyed both the produce, range of crafts and the social get togethers there. This was very much missed during lockdown and I’m very happy to see and be part of it starting again.

It is a valued community resource.

I first came across Bookham WI Market, as it was then called, in the early 80s in its infancy in the Harrison Room of the Old Barn Hall. Liking what I saw I became a food producer but owing to work commitments I didn’t really get involved until some years later.

This time plant propagation seemed an exciting opportunity and eventually organisation of the plant stall.
Asked to join the Committee I soon became the Secretary and involved in trying to increase awareness of this interesting facility within the village. For fifteen years I enjoyed the camaraderie of Friday mornings, the tasting sessions, autumn displays of pumpkins, mulled wine and mince pies, meeting new producers, stalls for Village Day and Christmas Village Open Evenings and of course that friendly interchange with the customers.

There was also the change of name to Bookham Country Market.

Now after months of Covid restrictions it has been a delight to be able to help with the restart of Market activities.
